Ever imagine what it would be like to shop with senior football players and Coach Dom Perry?  On Tuesday December 18, 2018 if you were at Target, you would have found out! Some of our players went shopping for the needs of six local families. Our students do a tremendous amount of work in our community. We thank the Touchdown Club for their donation to help others with this project.. Elementary One Call 10/23/18

Hello. This is Mr. Manley at Crestview Elementary letting everyone know about a safety concern at the elementary. We had a practice fire drill today and realized that our fire alarm system was not functioning properly. The problem has been fixed and the fire alarm is now functioning properly. We have notified our staff and the New Waterford Fire Dept. and they performed a safety check. We would like to thank Mr. Daryl Miller and the New Waterford Fire Department for their swift response.

Our alarm system is now functioioning. If it had not, the fire department would of remained walking the floors for the remainder of today. If the system could not have been fixed today, we would have needed to close school tomorrow. The Great News is…. that we are fully functioning safe and working. School is normal and our kids had very little disruption.

Safety Tip Line

On Sunday 10/14/18 at 10:43 AM,  we received a message from the safety tip line. The person making the tip wanted to be anonymous, which is ok and fine. However, you did not check the box for a return response that would generate a number for you to review the report later and still remain anonymous. Please make sure the box is checked for a response so that you can view the outcome.

Your concern is being investigated. The call number ID is....107-77-193-174. The matter involved one student being mean to another. Whoever you are, thank you for caring. We just have no way to notate what is being done.

Leaks...Leaks....and More Leaks

Glad we had a 2 HR Delay today for Teacher Development. Our maintenance staff has been busy on Sunday and Monday shoring up the place because we are leaking everywhere. Rooms of ceiling tile are being replaced. Rooms 206 at the Elementary, HS Gym, HS Home EC, HS Chemistry, HS History, and the Supt's Office all are leaking. These are the things the public does not always see because the building looks shiny and clean. We have a chance to fix this with the help of the State of Ohio. Without the state assistance these repairs become all a local responsibility. We need 9 million dollars in immediate repairs, and 21 million dollars additionally. With  the State help, we can build all new  efficient facility for 5.2 million dollars.

The ability to pay $ 0.00 is NOT an option. Shelter, Heat, and Water are necessities! The fiscally responsible option is to take the opportunity from the STATE.

HS class schedules

Students may pick up class schedules in the lobby of the HS beginning at 12:00pm Monday 8/20/18. Schedules will also be given to students during homeroom on the first day of school Wednesday 8/22/18. Any questions will be addressed on the first day of school.

Before and After Care Survey Results

Dear Community:

You are AWESOME! We had 73 parents respond whether they needed  before or after care services. We have worked with the YMCA on a proposal; however, the deal fell through. The Y would need a receptionist, insurance etc., whether we offered one YMCA program or several. However, with only one program, the cost factor is too high for just one option. Our dialogue is positive with the YMCA and we hope in the future is to offer multiple programs and to have the YMCA be a presence here at Crestview. At this time it is not feasible.

We have submitted a grant with the County ESC, Lisbon, and Wellsville to offer an after school program here for select students. However, we will not hear on that grant until late July. We are working hard to create partnerships to continue to strengthen our students and families. We will continue to explore every avenue to enhance experiences for our students.

Voice of the Valley: Heart of a REBEL!

Here at Crestview, we know him simply as Mr. B.  He is a part of our traditions, our memories, and our events. Andris Baltputnis has been a long time teacher, coach, AD and the voice of the REBELS. It is only appropriate that he is honored during Teachers Appreciation Week. He is a masterful person and educator! Last year at graduation he reminded everyone that the world is full of rebel fans...."Why else are roads and buses yellow and black?"

Please take a few minutes to watch this video highlighting his local and national work...

Yes it is Friday October 13th, my have our students aged? No ladies and gentlemen, it is our staff always learning, so that we can continue to grow our students. Our teachers today had class. Pictured above are some of our MS teachers who had to build a Bridge to Terabihtia. using straws, newspaper, and masking tape. Teachers are working at using problem solving skills and collaborative teams in design. They then had to see how their bridge stood up to weights. Dear Rebel Families…

This morning we had a bus on  an elementary run get into an accident. Our bus was stopped with its flashers on for student pick up. Another vehicle ran into the back corner of the bus. We had 8 students on the bus at the time. The best and greatest news is that all students and our driver are fine. NONE OF THE STUDENTS AND OUR DRIVER NEEDED MEDICAL ATTENTION.  Families were notified and the children went to school. I commend the emergency personnel, Nurse Janet, Our driver and our bus supervisor for their outstanding work. Most of all I would like to thank our kids for staying calm and their families for their patience, care, and love. Parents your calmness and love was just AWESOME!

We just wanted to make sure that everyone had the most up to date information!

Strengthen our Athletic Booster Club!

(One Call from Mr. Manley 7-13-17; 6:00 PM)

Dear Rebel Families:

I am calling to ask your support for our Crestview Athletic Boosters:

At Crestview, we've been fortunate to have an outstanding Athletic Boosters run by a great group of officers who have provided tens of thousands of dollars in the way of equipment, scholarships, t-shirts, and numerous other items. The group however is shrinking. When you have only a few, no one wins. Volunteers live at school which is impossible for family life balance.

In the past six years, the group has supported kids with scholarships, equipment, recognition, and school spirit and pride. They have spent over $130,000 in six years and they are in solid financial shape. We need your time. 100% of the funds are raised through workers at the concession stand. The goal is to get many volunteers so each will only have to work a handful of hours in  year. Without your help, this group supporting our kids faces disbanding. What would it be like with no recognition programs, no programs, and school spirit? You can be part of the solution while there is time to save and support this viable group!

Crestview to Host Boston Crusader Drum and Bugle Corp 6/24 and 6/25

We would like to invite you to come check out an exciting event that is taking place at our school this weekend. This Saturday (9am - 4pm) and Sunday (9am - 8pm) the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps will be rehearsing at Crestview. They will perform Saturday Night at Paul Brown Stadium in Massilion. You can watch them practice for FREE!

The Boston Crusaders are a member of the Drum Corps International organization that sponsors competitions across the country each summer. The participants in each of these organizations range in age from 14 to 21 and tour the the United States sleeping on gym floors and tour buses while rehearsing 10 to 12 hours each day to perfect their performances.

This is one of the best drum and bugle corps (VERY intense version of a marching band) in the world. All rehearsals are free and open to the public! Please come and see great marching music happening in your own backyard!!!

Here is a clip from their show entitled "Wicked."

MS & HS Rebels invited to join the All American Conference

On Tuesday,June 6, 2017, the All American Conference held a morning meeting and unanimously voted to extend an official invitation to the Crestview Rebels to the blue tier of the All American Conference. The Superintendent will be recommending to the school board at the June 14th meeting that we accept this invitation. The blue tier is comprised of schools in the Youngstown area that have district enrollments between 1150 and 1383 students. We would be the 3rd largest school in the conference; thus it is a good fit. We currently play some of these of these schools next year. The schools are:Campbell, Liberty, Brookfield, Labrae, Newton Falls, Champion and Edgewood. The invitation is to begin play officially for winter sports 2018 (18-19 school year). Football contracts are signed for two years and thus the schools already have contracts for fall of 17 & 18. The AD's will be working with the AAC to schedule us on their independent dates where openings allow through the fall of 2018.

Free Meals for students in Need during the summer

Spread the word: Kids eat free this summer!

Again this summer, the Summer Food Service Program is providing children with free, healthy meals, and we need your help spreading the word to families and students. Simply call (866) 3-HUNGRY, visit education.ohio.gov/KidsEat or download the free Ohio Department of Education mobile app for iPhone and Android and check back regularly to find meal times and locations.
We have started adding sites to our online map, and more locations and times will be added soon. Continue to check back in the coming weeks for new locations in your community.

The program ensures children ages 18 and younger continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer break from school, when they do not have access to school breakfasts or lunches. Children with disabilities who are on approved individualized education programs may participate through age 21. The Ohio Department of Education administers the program with funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

NBC News Highlighting the Efforts of a Crestview Family

NBC News will be highlighting the efforts of a Crestview family to change the laws in Ohio on distracted driving. The Tina Yanssens family has worked very hard over the past two years to educate the community about the dangers of distracted driving as a result of a crash that killed my father, Dave Muslovski on June 17, 2010. They also worked with Ohio legislative members and were instrumental in getting a law passed here in Ohio that went into effect 12/31/2012.

NBC news had been following the family’s story via online articles and did a story on them this past November. Our story will be airing tomorrow morning, January 10th on the Today Show and in the evening on Rock Center with Brian Williams. Mrs. Yansenns also indicated that the NBC Nightly News requested additional information as they also plan to do a piece tomorrow night.

Sophomore Dominic Perry Breaks School Shot Put Record

Shot Put

Thrower aiming to make state

By Brian Dzenis

- See more at: http://www.vindy.com/news/2017/apr/18/prep-track-rebels-perry-breaks-shot-put-/?newswatch#sthash.fPTGQMZy.dpuf

“My goal is just to beat my [personal record] and wherever that takes me is where I end up,” Perry said.

Right now, his personal record would take him to Columbus and there’s still time to get even better.

On April 11, Perry broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 54-7.25. The previous mark was Scott Raschilla’s throw of 52-7.25 in 2004. The sophomore’s throw would have been good for sixth place in last year’s state tournament.

“He’s had some incredible throws in practice that you just sit there and watch a kid that’s only 16 years old throw that far,” Crestview coach Greg Woolman said.

Perry crossed the 50-feet mark — a safe number to get to state — during his freshman season.

“I didn’t really know where I was going to end up. It just sort of happened,” Perry said.

He won a district title before injuring himself at regionals.

“I was warming up and I stepped out of the pit and I slipped and fell on my foot and I ended up tearing a plate in my [big] toe,” Perry said. “The big toe is a lot of balance. There was so much pain going through there. It changes your form. It changes everything.”

Survey: PAC Ticketing

Dear Crestview Community:

We are looking at the possibility of an an on-line ticketing system for paid events in the Perfoming Arts Center. Most events are FREE; however outside events and our spring musical come with a charge. We want to know if you would like the ability to use a credit card and pick your seat to an event in advance. Currently, everything is General Admission. We have a one question survey to see if this is of interest for our community.

Looks can be deceiving.

That’s the message behind a unique traveling exhibit created by the Bath and Copley Township Police Departments. The display is called “Hidden in Plain Sight.” The departments constructed what appears to be at first glance the bedroom of the average teenager.  But amidst the clutter of clothing scattered on the floor, school supplies on a desk and personal care products on a vanity are more than 150 items that can actually signal that a young person could be involved in risky, dangerous and even illegal activity.

March Informagram NewsLetter
Facility Meeting: 2/16/17 in HS Cafeteria

The Crestview Local Schools is in the process of doing a facility study to address our physical plant needs. The first priority is to address the academic needs of our students. Secondly, the study includes examining and seeking business partners for a possible community center. No decision or plan is in place! We will spend the next three to six months determining needs and priorities. We will examine how to do this with the least or no impact on our taxpayers. We have been notified that were are eligible for .88 cents on the dollar from the state for renovation or construction. The state will also assist us in this study and assist whether their dollars are applicable to our needs. The consultants will be here on the 16th during the meeting too. The school will present an update at this meeting We will be very transparent and seek community input. At the end of the three to six months we will have options to look at so that we can stay solvent for many years to come. It will be at that time, that we determine our plan.

Hasn't anyone done anything with the buildings along the way?

The Crestview Local Schools has an extensive maintenance plan. In fact, here are the totals for repairs and maintenance on just one area...the heating system over the last three years.

FY 2016 = $69,000

FY 2017 = $72,000

FY 18 = $46,000

Total = $188,000

At a public meetings one person said, "don't you have a maintenance plan?"  The answer is yes. Much like a homeowner, the repairs are exceeding the money we have.  As a homeowner, you would go to the bank for a home improvement or home equity loan.  As a school, we have to go to the public to  for bonds. This is why there is a bond issue on the ballot. We have not sought additional help since 1992. But unlike most homeowners, we have help with our project. The state will pay 88% of the cost of a new building, which is less than our repairs. This money from the state is from all citizens across the state including you!  This money will either stay here, or if we decline, it goes to the next district in line.  The State of Ohio WILL NOT  pay for our repairs since  the repairs are so great. What would you do as a homeowner under this circumstance? EX: Homeowner Fred Flinstone needs a new roof. His replacement roof costs $15,000 on his $100,000 home. A person knocks on the door and says, "John, I will build you a new $100,000  home if you come up with 12% or $12,000."

You asked and the Board Delivered!

The Crestview Board of Education passed a resolution adding additional accountability to the proposed bond issue. This is in addition to the checks and balances for school construction that were initiated in 1998 and after with the formation of the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission by the state legislature. Crestview passed its last issue in 1992 under the guidance the Ohio Department of Education. Did you know that ODE only completed 13 buildings in over 20 years? In 1998, the OFCC was formed with design criteria. In one year alone, OFCC constructed more buildings and was alloted more resources for school construction than the Ohio Department of Education was alloted in over 20 years total. The OFCC has reconfigured or built new with over 300 public school systems since 1998. They have implemented over a 1000 page design manual to assure each area is built to the highest possible standards for quality. There are many checks and balances that are listed at the OFCC website. Read the article below for additional information on accountability on the resolution of additional local measures by the Crestview Board of Education...

Student Athlete: Danny Moore

Student-Athlete: Danny Moore

COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WYTV) - Crestview senior Danny Moore knows how to light up a room.

He's a special talent for the Rebels, with a great personality. Danny's on track to graduate with 11 varsity letters in five different sports. Plus, he's a top-notch student, earning him the honor of our "33 Student-Athlete of the Week".

"Winning is very important to me," said Moore. "And bettering myself is even more important."

Danny is always up for a challenge. He's a versatile athlete at Crestview and State qualifier at the indoor track meet earlier this year. Danny's a big part of the relay teams and is team captain for the second straight season.

"I think my main role on the track team is keeping everybody loose. because like I said, track is torture. when you think about it, running in circles is pretty torturous. so track is all about having fun.

Danny's passion and positive outlook carried over to the football field, where he was an All-County safety. He helped lead Crestview to two playoff appearances in the past three seasons.

"In football, I just poured everything I could into every play because I just wanted to win," said Moore.

"And for track, I mean it's 100%, because I want to win and I want to be one of those guys that they're like, man he was pretty crazy."

Crestview preparing for Challenges,Opportunities

LISBON — With the possibility of renovating school buildings, expanding space and a possible community center addition, Crestview’s board of education held a public meeting Thursday to get some feedback from members of the community.

At the board meeting earlier this month, the board purchased two modulars from the Talawanda school district on the other side of the state in an effort to have more classroom space next school year. But that is only a temporary solution, according to Superintendent Matthew Manley.

The modulars may be used next year for “specials,” which are classes such as music or art where students only go for a short period of time once a week. The bathrooms in the modulars may not be hooked into an actual septic system, more of a temporary holding system which can be pumped out.

In the meantime, the modulars will allow for more space to be opened up for preschool. Manley said 50 to 60 children are currently being turned away who want preschool and the lines on signup day have started forming hours before the registration begins. The hope is this plan will give more children in the district a chance to better prepare for kindergarten.

Manley said Talawanda was the only owner of those modulars, which were new in 2003 and the district was using until they were able to move into new space during Christmas break. The modulars will have security cameras and intruder locks on the doors.

Manley also pointed out currently at Crestview there are $1.6 million in physical repairs and projects, but only $230,000 in the permanent improvement plan each year. Currently on the list is $355,000 in repairs to the flat roof portion of one of the buildings and a track that if it does not get resurfaced soon will deteriorate beyond repair.

Bullying and Harrassment together

School Climate Mission
We are committed at Crestview to create a bully free environment.  RESPECT for others plays a critical role in the development of REBELPRIDE with every student who attends CRESTVIEW.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to call, email, or set an appointment to meet with any of our teachers, principals, and counselors. The first step is an informal report with direct dialogue. If the problem persists, you may wish to file a more formal report.

Together we can provide a safe environment for our students to learn.

Filing a Report for Bullying/Harassment/Intimidation
Bullying, harassment and intimidation is defined by the Ohio Revised Code as an “intentional written, verbal, electronic, or physical act that a student has exhibited toward another particular student more than once and the behavior causes mental or physical harm to the other student, and is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student.”  (ORC3313.666)

If you have been the victim, or know of a victim, who is suffering bullying, harassment or intimidation as defined above, please use the form below to submit a report.  Reports should be turned in to the building principal of the victim.  If you wish to report anonymously, please mail the completed form to the appropriate principal.

False reports will result in disciplinary action.

How does Open Enrollment Work Financially?

Open Enrollment

There is much talk about open enrollment students and how they do not pay real estate/income taxes to our district.  Technically they do not pay taxes to our district directly, however some of their local tax dollars do come to our district indirectly.  Let me give you an internal example to explain.

Community, Unity, Opportunity: Vision 2020

On Tuesday April 24, 2018, the Crestview Local Schools presented the a report on the status of district  school buildings which was conducted by the Ohio Facilities Construction Committee. We began these discussion over a year ago and the report is now complete. The OFCC group is comprised of architects, engineers, and tradesmen who have many years of experience with construction. The report indicates that the schools need $8.900,000 of immediate replacements of the heating system, roofs, and septic and over 30 million dollars in total repair and replacement costs.

The commission will not remodel existing buildings because the cost to renovate is near the cost to build new. The commission will provide assistance for a new building; however, it will not help with current buildings. Therefore, without state help we would need to seek 8.9 million of local money for patchwork or seek  five million in local money in order to get  37 million dollars in state revenue to build a new pre K - 12 facility. We then would build a new 42 million dollar building for 5 million dollars of local money. This is the most fiscally sound recommendation for the long term good fo the Crestview Local Schools.

Here is the explanation from School Treasurer Charlene Mercure.

If the collections on the bond issue are in excess of what is needed, then the bond issue millage is reduced to ensure that there is not an excess of collections. The county auditor works with the school district to make sure this is not the case.  A school district is not allowed to collect more than is needed to make the bond payments. Thus, if property values increase and collection on taxes exceeds what is necessary to make the bond payments, the millage would be reduced.

When do we make up a snow day?

The Crestview Local Schools this year will physically make-up days with students after 8 closures or calamity days during the 2017 - 2018 school year. We currently are at 5 closures. We are now on hours. In the past the state gave 5 snow days. In years where the winters were harsh, the state sometimes waived the extra days to make-up. This is sometimes confusing, but for this year we wanted our community to know where we are at.

If we hit 8 days of closure and have a ninth, then that ninth day would be made up the Monday after Easter in accordance with our school calendar. Our hope is that we will not even need to address make-up days. We do encourage you to have your child read on any days off. Our teachers are busy preparing lessons, reading educational articles, grading, preparing their classroom and perfecting their craft during these closure days.  Learning is an opportunity and we still need to grow our students. It is just sometimes, the weather makes it unsafe for our buses to travel.

Crestview Schools Examines Future Possibilities
Students ask Superintendent Questions about the Future of the District

The Superintendent of the Crestview Schools has been meeting with students semi-annually to allow students an opportunity to ask questions and to have dialogue on the future of the district. The district also has a student board member assigned to the board to ask questions and allow communication between the students and the school board. Also, students serve on the Superintendent Advisory Board and on the District's Strategic Planning team. In addition, Mr. Manley has also been meeting with community groups through coffee houses  to assist in planning for district needs. Mr. Manley credits a "coffee house" at a local farm in 2016 as being instrumental in having dialogue and planning to expand preschool at the elementary.

The link below is the meeting held with students on September 26, 2018. The students asked many insightful questions. VIDEO Move the red cursor to hear the whole talk as Mr. Manley announces that Crestview is ranked 32nd by the State of Ohio for its quality of education. There are about 700 schools in Ohio.

What will the School Bond Issue Cost me?

The short of it is about $100.00 a year on a 100,000 home. We advise everyone to check with the county auditor for specific questions. Your situation may be less or more based on the Homestead Exemption or CAUV, etc..

The total mills are 2.93 mills. Our actual cost for the building only is 2.43 mills. The state requires .05 mills additional for permanent improvement. This is required, so when repairs are needed down the road, there is money available without returning to the voters. The term "mill" is confusing and the average citizen is concerned only about dollars. Here is what is certified by the auditor and it should help make it clear what an average citizen would pay in dollars. AUDITOR ESTIMATE

Stay Informed: Informational Meetings Abound

There will be several meetings this fall focusing on The Future of the Crestview Local Schools. The community has an opportunity for assistance from the State of Ohio to secure sound facilities and save taxpayers millions in current & future dollars. The district can build a new facility for less than the cost of needed repairs of the current building. In fact, the state will pay for 88% of a new facility. Imagine, being offered a new home for 88% off the sale price, and this new home is cheaper than the repairs of the current home. There will be many informational meetings this fall, so come out and get the facts.

There will be two types of  meetings this fall. The first is a town hall.  A town hall will have a short PowerPoint presentation followed by a panel discussion with a question and answer session. The panel includes Eric Risinger, Architect; Jay Radman, Director of Maintenance; Jason DeCenso, Parent/Community Member;  Dr. Edward Miller, Board President; Charlene Mercure, Treasurer; and Matthew Manley, Superintendent.

The other meetings are called coffeehouses where the district comes to the community at various locations. These meetings will have informal dialogue about the future of the district. Please plan on attending a session, so that you can get accurate information.

Bond issue to be on November Ballot

July 11, 2018 Board Meeting

The Crestview Local School Board approved a resolution to put a bond issue on the November 6, 2018 ballot. This bond issue represents the Crestview Community’s share in a building project with the State of Ohio. The board vote recommends building a new Pre-k to 12 building. Crestview is eligible for 88% State funding or 38 million dollars from the State of Ohio for a new building only. The local share then would be 5.2 million dollars for new construction. The total cost of the project is 43.2 million dollars

The school board has determined this is the most fiscally responsible choice to work with the State of Ohio to build a new Pre-k to 12 building. The initiative will save the local taxpayer millions because of the assistance by the State of Ohio. The district currently needs at least 9 million dollars in emergency repairs for heating and roofing. By pursuing the project with the State, the district will NOT need a 9 million dollar emergency levy for repairs. The ballot initiative asks for 5.2 million dollars locally. The millage is yet to be certified by the County Auditor.
